Working with Jazz Vocalists: A Crash Course for Instrumental/Classical Choral Directors, and Jazz Vocal Students

Long Beach City College Jazz Directors Andrea Calderwood (vocal) and Pat Sheng (Instrumental) will address techniques for working with Jazz Vocalists. Perspective will be given from both the Classical Choral and Instrumental point of view. Activities being shared will include warm ups and exercises for improvisation, time feel, count offs, key selection, and the need for "on-mic" consistency in rehearsal. Pro's and con's from the perspective of each area will be shared and discussed to help fine tune the growth of jazz vocalists in combo, bib-band, jazz-choir, and as a soloist. Students are also encouraged to attend and participate.

Target Audience

Anyone teaching Jazz Vocalists. Instrumental band and jazz directors, Classical Choral Directors, and Vocal Jazz Directors.

Andrea Calderwood

Long Beach City College

Andrea Calderwood is an accomplished arranger, educator, and performer based in Southern California. She holds a Master’s Degree in Jazz Studies from The Bob Cole Conservatory at CSU Long Beach, an Undergrad in Classical Voice from CSU Fullerton, and an AA in Music from Mt San Antonio College. She is a Downbeat Award-winning arranger and performer, and her students have earned national recognition, including multiple Downbeat Student Awards and placements in the California All-State Vocal Jazz Ensembles.

Andrea is the Director of Jazz Vocal Studies at Long Beach City College, where she leads the award-winning ensemble The Lyrical Workers and a community Evening Vocal Jazz Choir. A dedicated advocate for equity in education, she is an LGBTQ+ and Undocu-Ally, a member of the LBCC Equity Task Force, and a past presenter at CASMEC and the Jazz Education Network Conference. She’s been a clinician at the JEN Conference, Cuesta Vocal Jazz Festival, Fullerton Jazz Festival, The Brandon Jazz Festival, and the CMEA State Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Her performance and recording credits include work with Ben Folds, John Daversa, Genevieve Artadi, Vardan Ovsepian, Kyle Crane,Andy Wardell, and Katisse Buckingham. She has sang under the direction of Christine Guter, Jonathan Talberg, Matt Falker, Rob Istad, John Alexander, Jill DeWeese, and Bruce Rogers. She is a member of ACDA, JEN, CAJ, and has taught at institutions including Cerritos College, Musicians Institute, and LA College of Music, College of the Canyons, Fullerton Union High School, and Valencia High School (Santa Clarita).

 

Patrick Sheng

Long Beach City College

atrick Sheng is a jazz saxophonist, composer, and arranger, currently serving as the Director of Instrumental Jazz Studies at Long Beach City College. He received his Bachelors and Masters of Music from Washington State University, under the direction of prominent saxophonists Greg Yasinitsky, Horace Alexander Young, and David Hagelganz.

As an educator, he has taught jazz and saxophone courses at McNeese State University, Clark College, and Washington State University. He has served as the president of the Louisiana Association for Jazz Education, and works regularly as a conductor, clinician, organizer, and adjudicator for honor bands and jazz festivals.

As a performer, Patrick has performed all over the world as a professional musician, and has shared the stage with jazz artists such as Joey DeFrancesco, Wycliffe Gordon, Tom Scott, Jeff Coffin, Andy Narell, Wayne Wallace, and many others. He has also performed with the Spokane Symphony Pops, Washington-Idaho Symphony, The Harry James Orchestra, and has been featured on recordings and articles in Jazziz Magazine.
