What are the specific rehearsal strategies and performance behaviors used in chamber ensemble coaching that can be successfully incorporated into the large ensemble setting? As conductors of large ensembles, we often invoke the conductor-less chamber ensemble as an ideal that invites independence and direct communication among musicians. However, since most young musicians have yet to engage in chamber music experiences, they lack that reference. Modeling a live coaching of Armando Bayolo’s “In it Together,” the clinician will demonstrate practical methods targeting improvement and student ownership of ensemble rhythm, intonation and phrasing while extrapolating their application to the large ensemble.
