Music for Everyone: Funding and Accessibility for SPED Students in the Music Classroom

Many students with physical disabilities hesitate to enroll in instrumental music classes due to perceived physical barriers to participation. This session will explore practical strategies for removing those barriers and creating an inclusive environment where all students can succeed. The clinician will also share tips for securing funding and resources, as well as effective approaches for integrating students with special education needs seamlessly into your instrumental music program.

Meredith Mellin

Silverado Middle School

Meredith holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of the Pacific and a Master of Music in Music Education with a conducting specialization from Colorado State University, Fort Collins. Since 2010, she has served as the band director at Silverado Middle School, where she teaches 6th–8th grade Band, Jazz Band, Choir, and Musical Theater.

During her time at Silverado, Meredith has fostered a strong culture of collaboration with the Special Education (SPED) department, creating inclusive opportunities for all students to participate in music. Through the use of adaptive equipment and the support of qualified personnel, she ensures that students of all abilities can access and thrive in her music classes.
