LOOK!! It’s ME!!: Black Cultural Representation in the Concert Band Repertoire

Thursday – January 15, 2026 at 12:00 PM

Historically, wind band rep has been dominated by composers of Euro descent like Holst. However, other ethnicities have contributed to developing wind lit in substantive ways. Black composers, specifically, have contributed quality works alongside more recognizable white counterparts. This session introduces lesser-known composers, identifies Black compositional elements, & provides tools to incorporate Black wind lit into performance to increase representation reflecting ensemble membership.
