This clinic will cover dozens of tips and tricks for teaching beginning instrumental musicians gleaned from 25 years of teaching beginning band. The activities and concepts presented are designed to add variety to your “pedagogical tool belt,” and will work with any method book or curriculum. Most of the information can be applied to multiple different classroom scenarios, from both same- and mixed-instrument classes to private lessons. Learn new and interesting ways to teach tone production, reinforce music reading ability, and keep your students engaged.The session will be interactive, so bring your instrument or voice and be ready to participate. Samuel Gipson, M.A. has been teaching instrumental music for more than 25 years. He is a National Board Certified Teacher and received his B.A. with a double emphasis in Music Theory & Composition and Music Education and an M.A. in Teaching from Azusa Pacific University. After building a band program in Duarte, CA he now leads the 5-person band director team at Reedley High School in Reedley, CA. His ensembles have received 16 Unanimous Superior ratings at CMEA Large Group Festivals, and have performed with the Clovis Wind Symphony and the Symphony Silicon Valley in its presentation of “Music from Studio Ghibli” with Joe Hisaishi. He has taught beginners through high school for more than 2 decades.
