Demystifying the “Latin” Rhythm Section

The clinician will discuss a respectful and practical approach to "Latin" big band and small group charts in the Afro-Cuban Tradition. It is inevitable that jazz students and educators we will encounter terms like: Salsa, Latin Jazz, Rumba, Cha Cha and the dreaded LATIN in a chart or jam session. The clinician will address the role of the timbales, congas, cowbells, drumset, bass, and piano in an effort to understand how they work together to create a swinging "Latin" sound.

Target Audience

High School Jazz Band directors, College Big Band directors and students, Percussion Majors, Percussion educators, Jazz students of all ages.

Jose Miguel Perez

Jose Miguel Perez is a Drummer/Percussionist based in Los Angeles CA.  Jose is currently timbalero with the Grammy Award winning Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band.  Jose is active as a performer and educator in the Salsa, Jazz and Latin Jazz space.  In addition to the Poncho Sanchez band, Jose has toured with Snarky Puppy, YaYennings Quartet, Haley Reinhart, Gordon Goodwin, Pomplamoose, Bokanté and many more. Perez recently presented masterclasses in Afro Cuban percussion at Cal State Northridge and Appalachian State University.
