The California Alliance for Jazz invites you to attend the CAJ Instrumental Jazz New Music Reading Session during the upcoming CASMEC event. This session provides a great opportunity for jazz band directors to hear new offerings by reputable jazz publishers. Jeff Jarvis, Director of Jazz Studies at California State University, Long Beach, will direct a live big band performing a variety of accessible charts that are suitable for secondary school programming. Attendees will receive a handout with information about the music including instrumentation, difficulty level, style, brass ranges, how rhythm section parts are notated, whether suggested solos are provided, and links to the various publishers.

Jeff Jarvis is a multi-faceted music industry professional who maintains an ambitious international itinerary as an S.E. Shires trumpet artist and guest conductor. His solo recordings as a jazz trumpeter have received frequent airplay. Published by Belwin Jazz, UNC Jazz Press, iJazz and Kendor Music Publishing, Jarvis frequently composes for school, military, professional big bands and pops orchestras. Jeff serves as Director of Jazz Studies for the Bob Cole Conservatory at California State University Long Beach and has served as President of the California Alliance for Jazz, Vice-President of the International Association for Jazz Education, and was an owner of Kendor Music, Inc. from 1985-2015. Jarvis is a member of the International Society of Jazz Arrangers and Composers and is a Gold Medal winner in the Global Music Awards, an international arts organization that recognized him in 2019 with a special award for “Lifetime Contributions to Jazz and Jazz Education”.
