You’ve Got This! Growing Confidence as a Thoughtful and Compassionate Leader

As future teachers, you are going to cultivate leadership skills. Some will develop quickly, and others take time. In this interactive session participants will explore the following:
- Self-awareness strategies
- How to build relationships and belongingness
- Visionary outlook and goal-orientation
- Benefits of consistency, communication and honesty
- How to delegate and encourage teamwork
- How to foster positivity and creativity
- How to lead by example
- Leadership through encouragement and empowerment
Activities will include reflection, sharing of ideas and experiences, hands-on team building games, creative music making, and other music related games. Please come prepared to participate and leave feeling more confident as a leader.

Michelle McConkey

California State University, Chico

Dr. Michelle S. McConkey, is an Associate Professor of music education at California State University in Chico.  She teaches courses in Music Education, Aural Musicianship, and Music for Children for Liberal Studies students. Michelle received her doctorate degree from ASU, a Master of Music at BYU, and a Bachelor of Music from the Crane School of Music, all in Music Education. Michelle has taught children for over 20 years, nine years in public and private schools in New York State, Utah, and Arizona. She has completed Kodàly certification and has presented professional development workshops and research sessions at various state, national and international conferences. Michelle’s research interest includes SEL in the schools, SEL for the collegiate, and the music teacher’s role in the emotional development of children. 

Angelina Gomez

California State University, Chico

Angelina Gomez is the Director of Bands at California State University, Chico where she leads the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and Pep Band. She also teaches conducting and music education courses, studio instruction in clarinet and saxophone, and supervises the student chapter of the National Band Association. Dr. Gomez maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and rehearsal clinician throughout Northern California. She received her degrees from Sonoma State University, Washington State University, and the University of Kansas. Prior to her appointment at Chico State, Dr. Gomez taught in Santa Rosa City Schools and the Wright Elementary School District. Dr. Gomez is a member of the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), the National Band Association (NBA), the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the California Music Educators Association (CMEA), Women Band Directors International (WBDI), and is an honorary member of the Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority.
