Pasillo and Pasacalle: Community Building Through Ecuadorian Music

Friday – January 16, 2026 at 9:00 AM

Music around the world often serves an important role in uniting people from various communities. In Ecuador, the blend of traditional indigenous music with European music has resulted in a music that has helped shape Ecuadorian national identity and bring communities together. This presentation will introduce participants to two styles of Ecuadorian music, the Pasillo and Pasacalle, and demonstrate how these styles have evolved over time and helped shape Ecuadorian national identity. Participants will also get first-hand experience in these styles by singing, playing, creating, and dancing to the Pasillo and Pasacalle. Through this workshop, participants will increase their understanding of Ecuadorian music and cultural practices, as well as how music can be a tool for community building.
