Building Belonging: Self-Determination Theory in the Music Classroom

Friday – January 16, 2026 at 2:00 PM

This session will explore how music educators can integrate trauma-informed pedagogy to cultivate a student-centered classroom rooted in the three core tenets of Self-Determination Theory: Autonomy, belonging, and relatedness. By recognizing the diverse lived experiences our students bring, the presenter and attendees will examine strategies to foster intrinsic motivation, support emotional well-being, and build a strong sense of community. Through this lens, educators will gain tools to create inclusive, empowering environments in their music classrooms that honor each student’s voice and experience.
