Looking Outside of Music Education to Create Our Ideal Classroom

How can we create a classroom that not only teaches music, but also fosters education of the whole student? Utilizing research from the fields of leadership, mindfulness, and self-improvement, this presentation is designed to engage in thoughtful discussion around the art of teaching and how we can cultivate an environment that educates the whole student. Discover innovative strategies to create a more holistic and engaging classroom, drawing inspiration from sources outside the traditional music education field. By the end of our session, you will have tangible ideas and projects that you can implement with your students in the coming year.

Mark Lee

Mark Lee is currently pursuing a Masters in Instrumental Music Conducting at San Jose State University. He assists the SJSU Spartan Marching Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble. He is delighted to be working under the guidance of Dr. David Vickerman and Dr. Craig McKenzie as he follows his passion to become a better educator and conductor.

Mark graduated with a degree in Music History from UCLA, where he had the privilege of studying under Jens Lindeman, Travis Cross, Patrick Sheridan, and other exceptional teachers.

Mark taught at Dublin High School during the 22-23 school year where he co-taught the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Orchestra, and the Dublin Irish guard with Elliot Polot. His performances have included conducting at The Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, and assistant conducting for the San Jose Wind Symphony.

David Vickerman

Dr. David Vickerman, 2015 winner of The American Prize in Conducting and 2023 winner of the Outstanding Music Educator Award for CMEA Bay Section, is an Associate Professor of Music and the Director of Bands at San José State University.  In addition to conducting the Wind Ensemble and the new music ensemble, he teaches undergraduate and graduate conducting. He is also the Music and Artistic Director for the San José Wind Symphony, the West Coast’s premier wind symphony. Prior to his appointment at San José State University, he was the Director of Bands at The College of New Jersey as well as Director of Bands on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus. In addition to his duties at SJSU, he has served as the Associate Conductor of Great Noise Ensemble, in Washington D.C. and he is a highly sought-after guest conductor, having conducted numerous honor bands across the country.
