Getting The Most Out Of Your Big Band Rehearsals: Tips and Techniques

The clinic will consist of clinicians conducting a rehearsal with a high School big band. In the process, clinicians will be discussing and demonstrating best practices for rehearsals while working with the live big band.

David Beatty

Azusa Pacific university
David Beatty is currently Faculty Emeritus in Commercial Music at Azusa Pacific University. For 24 years he directed the critically acclaimed APU Jazz Ensemble. Under his leadership the group performed extensively and made several recordings, developing a reputation for musical excellence. Beatty’s performance experience includes recording music for motion pictures, television, commercials, & albums for many artists. Live performance credits range from symphony orchestras to Broadway national road tours. He has extensive big band jazz experience in both modern and traditional bands including tours of duty in the Bill Watrous Wildlife Refuge West band and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. He is also an active composer, arranger, & music copyist. Mr. Beatty holds a B.M. in Trombone Performance from CSUN, a M.M. in Commercial Music Performance from CSULA and a M.B.A. from Claremont Graduate University. He serves on the faculty of the Idyllwild Arts Summer Jazz Academy, and is a frequent adjudicator and clinician.

Gary Pratt

Gary Pratt’s contributions as an adjudicator and music advocate are extensive. He has served as a judge for prestigious events including The Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Awards and The NARAS Foundation Grammy Signature Schools. Furthermore, his involvement as a board member of the “Pink Pop” International Jazz Exchange Program in Germany highlights his dedication to fostering international cultural exchanges through jazz education. Mr. Pratt’s outstanding achievements have been recognized with notable awards, including the California Music Educators Association (CMEA) Jazz Educator Award and induction into the California Alliance for Jazz (CAJ) Hall of Fame. These accolades underscore his profound impact and enduring commitment to advancing jazz education and music performance. Gary Pratt’s multifaceted career and unwavering dedication to music education have left an indelible mark on students, colleagues, and the broader music community. His passion, expertise, and leadership continue to inspire and shape the future of music education and performance.
