The clinician will discuss ways the music teacher can combine trauma informed pedagogy with the active learning cycle. The clinician will provide strategies for (1) repertoire selection, (2) community building, (3) fostering student autonomy, and (4) identity formation.

Ramon Cardenas

Dr. Ramon Cardenas was recently appointed as the Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education at San Diego State University. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Cardenas completed his PhD in Music Education – Choral Conducting at Florida State University. Dr. Cardenas taught choir and piano at Redlands East Valley High School and Buena Park High School before his graduate studies. Research interests include diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and belonging; best exercise practices for music educators and conductors; and preparing preservice music teachers for the profession. In his free time, he loves to cook, bake, play piano, and lift weights. He lives in San Diego with his partner and their two corgis.
