Please join the CAJ Board for our annual General Session. This is a casual, meet-and-greet gathering open to our membership and anyone interested in jazz or learning more about the California Alliance for Jazz. Everyone is welcome!
We will tell you about some of our CAJ programs - our Tune Up clinics, our CAJ Summer Teacher's Institute, scholarship opportunities for students, our Hall of Fame, our Collegiate chapter, and our online resources. We would love to get ideas on how we can make CAJ a valuable resource for you!

California Alliance for Jazz
The California Alliance for Jazz (CAJ) is an organization created to promote jazz education and performance throughout the state. We teach, promote, and believe jazz is an African-American art form, which has inspired people of all races, cultures, and nationalities to dedicate their lives to its performance and development. Since its earliest days, this Black American music, born from slavery, has served as the soundtrack to movements for equality and justice and continues to do so today. Considered by some to be less significant when compared to its classical counterpart, Black American music has, in fact, defined American culture. CAJ chooses to take action in fighting racism through music.
Our purpose is to:
-
Foster and promote the understanding and appreciation of jazz and its artistic performance.
-
Lend assistance and guidance in the organization and development of jazz and popular music curricula in schools and colleges to include instrumental and vocal ensembles of all types and sizes.
-
Foster the application of jazz principles to music materials and methods at all levels of education both public and private.
-
Disseminate educational and professional news of interest to music educators.
-
Assist in the organization of conferences, clinics, festivals, and symposiums.
-
Cooperate with all organizations dedicated to the development of musical culture.
-
Recognize those who contribute to jazz education and to the evolution of the music in our state.
