Incorporating Popular, Informal, and Vernacular Music and Pedagogy in the Choral Classroom

This session will explore how choral music educators can incorporate popular, informal, and vernacular music and pedagogy into the secondary and undergraduate student experience. Attendees will engage with suggestive practices such as: (a) composition and improvisation exercises, (b) repertoire and programming, and (c) collaborative music technology in and outside of the choral classroom. Session attendees will receive a choral music reading packet.

Emily Mercado

The University of Utah

Emily Mercado, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Choral Music Education and the Music Education Area Head at The University of Utah. Mercado is an active conductor, and her research has appeared in leading journals including Research Studies in Music Education, Journal of Music Teacher Education, and The British Journal of Music Education. Mercado currently serves as ACDA-UT president and is involved in developing community partnerships with schools. Mercado received a Ph.D. in Music Education from Louisiana State University, a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Oregon State University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oregon State University. Prior to joining the faculty at The University of Utah, Mercado taught choir for nine years at Crescent Valley High School and Cheldelin Middle School in Corvallis, OR.
