The presenter will discuss a qualitative study exploring music educators’ perceptions of supporting high school students' motivation using the framework of Self-Determination Theory. The session examines how satisfying three basic psychological needs—autonomy, competence, and relatedness—can foster sustained musical engagement. The presenter will outline key themes from the experiences of 12 classroom and studio teachers, highlighting practical strategies such as cultivating student ownership, instilling confidence through effort, and building inclusive community environments. Attendees will learn how addressing these core needs effectively buffers against common motivational barriers, offering actionable recommendations to enhance student motivation and long-term participation in music education.

Valley Christian Schools Conservatory of the Arts
Ivan Utomo graduated from California Baptist University with a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, and a Master of Music in Piano Performance & Music Composition. He joined the Valley Christian Community in the Fall of 2017, teaching Piano and AP Music Theory. In 2018 Ivan enrolled in an online EdD program through Grand Canyon University in K-12 Organizational Leadership. Currently Ivan serves as an Associate Director in the VCS Conservatory of the Arts, and as Worship Arts Director with the Spiritual Formation Office. He is passionate about helping students become all God has created them to be: artistically, educationally, spiritually. Ivan also loves Arsenal Football Club, cats, chess, Lord of the Rings, food, and traveling.
