MOVING AND GROOVING! – Paul Rolland Shifting and Vibrato Actions for Your String Students

Saturday – January 16, 2027 at 1:00 PM | Crest Theatre

This session explores Paul Rolland’s movement-based approach to teaching shifting and vibrato, demonstrating how his research-driven pedagogy continues to shape 21st-century string instruction. Rooted in the principles outlined in his major text, The Teaching of Action in String Playing, Rolland’s pedagogy emphasizes natural movement, biomechanical efficiency, and the early introduction of essential playing actions.

Rolland’s Action Studies were intentionally designed to be applicable across methods, repertoire, styles, age groups, and diverse teaching environments, including private studios, school programs, and with all four stringed instruments: violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Grounded in scientific inquiry, this inclusive and accessible approach supports teachers and learners of varied backgrounds and at every level.

Through guided explanation and active participation, attendees will explore how shifting and vibrato can be introduced early and refined over time, gaining practical strategies for fostering healthy, expressive playing through Rolland’s research-informed, adaptable approach. Attendees are encouraged to bring instruments.
