This panel session will unpack the experiences and learning of pre-service music teachers’ who participate in an academic Mariachi ensemble, Mariachi De La Playa. Primarily comprised of music education majors (ranging from no experience to significant experience in Mariachi), these musicians learn and perform on secondary and tertiary instruments while acquiring the practices and traditions of Mariachi. Panelists will share their individual experiences as well as potential impact on their future music teaching. Participants will have multiple opportunities to ask questions from the panelists throughout the session.

Thies, PhD, is Area Director of Music Education for the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music and Coordinator of Music Education for the Single Subject Credential Program in the College of Education at California State University, Long Beach. Her creative, pedagogical, and research interests focus on music education at the intersection of creativity, culturally responsive and sustaining practices, and empowering individual identities.
