Sequential teaching is part of an effective teacher’s tool kit in developing an understanding of musical skills and concepts. However, the teaching of games and dances from various cultures can be messy and often times left out entirely due to the lack of teacher experience or resources. This session will engage participants in decoding directions and identifying steps to sequence the learning of games and dances from various cultures. Participants can expect to engage in sample activities and see trusted digital resources that can be used right away. Tips for including learners with a variety of needs will also be provided.

Dr. Emily Mason is an Associate Professor at California State University, Fresno, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education. She holds degrees from Florida State University (Ph.D., Music Education), the Ohio State University (M.M., Vocal Performance) and Capital University (B.M., Music Education). An elementary general music specialist, Dr. Mason has certification and training in several teaching pedagogies including the Kodály Method, Orff-Schulwerk Approach, and Dalcroze-Eurhythmics. An active clinician and researcher, Dr. Mason has presented clinics and research at state and national conferences, and has been published in Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, the Music Educators Journal, General Music Today, and the Choral Journal. Additionally, Dr. Mason frequently presents professional development workshops for music teachers in numerous school districts.
