Engaging High School Music Students in 2027: Tried and True Tools for a Changing World

Is there a secret to meeting students where they are and involving them in the process so teaching feels more like a two-way street? Join new San José State music education faculty Dr. Laura Bock and SJSU choral-music ed faculty Dr. Corie Brown to unpack best practice tools to engage students in music making and reinvigorate the rehearsal space. Successful engagement strategies boost student morale and build opportunities for joy in the music classroom while also increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of teacher instruction. Teachers will leave with tried and true tips to get and keep students engaged kinesthetically, socially, neurologically, and communally. New repertoire will also be shared in this hands-on session built for any level educator ready to experience the tools in action!

Corie Brown

Corie Brown (she/her) serves as Associate Professor of Choirs and Music Education at San José State University. Prior to training in conducting at the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Oregon, Dr. Brown taught in Colombia with the country’s music program Fundación Nacional Batuta as well as in the midwest United States. She is active nationally and internationally as a clinician and guest conductor, most recently representing the USA in the Philippines as a fellow with the ACDA International Conductor’s Exchange Program. Brown is also a scholar, arranger, and co-edits the Molina Brown Choral Series with La Voz Publishing.

Laura Bock

Laura Bock is Assistant Professor of Music Education at San José State University. Dr. Bock grew up in central Maryland as an active member of her high school band and orchestra programs. She completed a B.M. in Music Education and Flute Performance at James Madison University and both an M.M. and a Ph.D. in Music and Human Learning at The University of Texas at Austin. From 2011 to 2015, Bock taught 5th and 6th grade band at Walker Upper Elementary School in Charlottesville, Virginia. Between 2017 and 2022, Bock was the Assistant Band Director at Blue Valley Southwest High School and associated feeder schools in Overland Park, Kansas, working with students in grades 5-12. While completing her Ph.D., Bock taught orchestra and early childhood music with the UT String Project. Her research focuses on the relationships between goal setting, accomplishment, and efficiency in music practice.
