From Imitation to Independence: A Hands-On Introduction to the First Steps in Music Approach

Thursday – January 14, 2027 at 1:00 PM | A7

This interactive session invites teachers to experience music learning through movement, singing, play, and discovery using Dr. John Feierabend’s First Steps in Music® approach. Designed for educators working with children ages 3–9, the clinician will demonstrate how tunefulness, beatfulness, and artfulness grow through joyful, structured musical experiences that transform imitation into independence.
Participants will move, sing, explore, improvise, and reflect while experiencing elements of the First Steps in Music® workout, including pitch exploration, song fragments, solo singing, arioso improvisation, beat motions, and expressive movement. The session highlights strategies that create multiple access points for multilingual learners and students with varied musical backgrounds and readiness levels.

Participants will leave with ready-to-use activities, repertoire ideas, lesson structures, and practical tools adaptable to diverse early childhood and elementary music settings.
