New Voices in String Pedagogy: Commissioning Inclusive and Innovative Repertoire

Friday – January 15, 2027 at 4:00 PM | B10

This session presents a model for integrating contemporary composition, inclusive representation, and evidence-based string pedagogy through the commissioning of new pedagogical works for violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Rooted in the legacy of Paul Rolland and his collaborations with composer Stanley Fletcher (New Tunes for Strings), the project reimagines the relationship between technical development, musical expression, and repertoire creation for today’s students and teachers.

The presentation will outline the collaborative process between pedagogue and composers, emphasizing creative partnership, iterative feedback, and the integration of pedagogical principles while honoring each composer’s distinct musical voice. Composers from historically marginalized communities were invited to engage Rolland’s Action Studies while drawing on their own musical languages.

The resulting works span beginner to advanced levels and function as solos, teacher–student duets, or ensemble pieces. Live demonstrations will illustrate how pedagogical goals are embedded musically. Attendees gain a replicable framework for commissioning inclusive repertoire.
